Boosterism at the TE goes into overdrive but Sam is immune this time

October 30, 2011 by fredgooltz

December’s shipping rates began to decline so in early January the TE and other papers really talk up expectations. It works, many more people flood into town. But fewer and fewer are being hired into the mills or get into the speculative feet bubble. local city politicians try desperately to get them to open shops and other industry to diversify the economy. There is an increase of boarding houses with “to let” signs. The next bubble appears to be the town of Austin itself. Building a town on the Reese River in the middle of the State. Dozens of wagons bringing timber, dry goods, hardware, etc. The wandering speculators would just up and leave any of the 20 El Dorados (Gold Lake, Gold Beach, Cariboo, Gold Bluff, Kern River, Fraser River, Pike’s Peak, Slate Range)
