A rolling street theatre parade rolls though town ending at a theatre

November 6, 2011 by fredgooltz

Lincoln’s First of January Proclamation (Emancipation Proclamation) news reached VC and people had a giant street fair of dancing and fundraising for the Sanitary Fund (the precursor to the Red Cross). Sam Clemens is there and reporting on the party. He is drunk and makes an ass of himself, and it all made it into the paper. ST – pg 114
